Tree Pruning

Tree pruning is often less about cutting and more about understanding what the tree needs and how it sits within the garden. Sometimes it’s a matter of guiding a younger tree into a better shape, other times it’s about easing the weight out of a mature tree or taking out deadwood to keep it healthy.

In most cases, it’s a combination of these things. The aim is to work with the tree in a way that feels balanced, rather than forcing it into something it’s not.

In some situations, pruning is also needed to maintain safe distances from overhead lines or neighbouring structures.

Tree Size Reduction

Reducing the size of a tree needs to be done with a bit of restraint. Cutting a tree back too hard, or “topping” it, often creates more problems than it solves It can create weak growth, poor structure, and a tree that never really recovers properly.

A more considered approach is to gradually reduce the canopy while keeping the natural shape of the tree intact. That might mean doing the work over time, rather than all at once.

In some situations, especially on tighter or steeper Wellington sites, it becomes a question of whether reduction is the right approach at all, or whether removal would make more sense longer term.

Crown Thinning

Crown thinning is about opening the tree up rather than making it smaller. By selectively removing branches, you let more light and air move through the canopy.

It’s often a subtle change, but it can improve the health of the tree and make the surrounding garden feel less enclosed.

Tree Pruning Wellington

We carry out tree pruning and tree trimming across Wellington, working on everything from smaller garden trees through to larger, more established specimens.

If you’d like us to take a look, we’re happy to come out and talk through what might work best.

The whole garden approach

At the Arborist and the Gardener, we tend to look at pruning as part of the wider garden, not as a standalone job. A small adjustment to a tree can change how light moves through a space, how planting performs underneath, and how the garden feels overall. This makes the work not just about the tree but about making the whole space function better. Our garden designers can also advise you on how to make your garden work better. And we can help with any garden maintenance work.

We also offer tree removal, hedge trimming, power line clearing, emergency tree work, crown lifts and shaping.

  Faqs

How often should trees be pruned?

It depends on the type of tree and how it’s growing in the space. Some trees benefit from light, regular pruning every couple of years, while others can be left longer. In most cases, it’s better to prune little and often rather than leave it too long and have to take too much off at once.

What’s the difference between tree pruning and tree trimming?

The terms are often used interchangeably, but pruning usually refers to more considered work — shaping the tree, removing deadwood, and improving structure. Trimming is often lighter, more cosmetic work. In reality, most jobs are a mix of both, depending on what the tree needs.

When is the best time to prune trees in Wellington?

A lot of pruning can be done year-round, but timing can make a difference depending on the species and what you’re trying to achieve. For example, some trees respond better to pruning in late winter or early spring, while others are better left until after flowering. Wellington’s wind exposure can also be a factor, especially with larger trees.

How much of a tree can you safely remove?

As a general rule, no more than about 20–30% of the canopy should be removed at one time. Taking more than that can put the tree under stress and lead to poor regrowth. If a tree needs more significant work, it’s often better to spread it over a few seasons.

Will pruning make my tree grow faster?

Pruning can encourage new growth, but it depends on how it’s done. Heavy cutting often leads to fast, weak regrowth, while more selective pruning supports slower, stronger development. The aim is usually to improve the structure and health of the tree, rather than just encourage growth.

Can pruning improve light in my garden?

Yes, often quite noticeably. Techniques like crown lifting or thinning can let more light through without needing to remove the tree entirely. Even small changes can make a difference to how the garden feels and what will grow underneath.

Is pruning better than removing a tree?

In many cases, yes. A well-pruned tree can be reshaped to work better in the space, reducing shade, weight, or spread. That said, there are situations where removal is the more practical long-term option, especially if the tree is too large for the site or causing ongoing issues.

What happens to the waste?

That’s up to you. We can remove everything from site, mulch it, or leave firewood if that’s useful. It depends on the job and what you’d prefer.

Do you work on large trees?

Yes, we work on both smaller garden trees and larger, established trees. Larger jobs just require a bit more planning, especially on Wellington’s steeper or tighter sites.

Do I need consent to prune a tree in Wellington?

Most routine pruning doesn’t require consent, but some protected trees may have restrictions. If there’s any uncertainty, it’s worth checking, and we can help point you in the right direction.

Testimonials

“After the February storm brought down massive leaders from our Pohutukawa tree, Max dropped everything to come out and help us get on top of a genuinely stressful situation. His response was prompt and professional, and he immediately put us at ease with a thorough assessment of the tree’s condition.
What stood out most was how pragmatic Max was throughout the whole process. Rather than just cutting back everything in sight, he took the time to explain the pruning decisions, balancing the tree’s health with making it safer for our property. He kept me in the loop at every step and I never had to chase him for an update, which made the whole experience so much less stressful than it could have been. He was also genuinely understanding of our priorities and constraints, never once making us feel like we were adding complexity to his day.” (Rohan, Karori, Wellington)

“I would recommend Max for any arborist work you require.  Max has just thinned out our large Pohutukawa, removing dead and damaged branches and did a fantastic job.  Our backyard was left tidy, a collection of firewood stacked under the deck from the trimming and now the Kaka, Tui and Kereru can fly easily through the tree.” Grant (Khandallah), Wellington

“Max and his team has worked for us several times, pruning and trimming various trees. His work has been excellent – he is a skilled arborist and has a very good eye. He is reliable, turning up when he says he will and communicating well. He is also very pleasant to have around.  I recommend him highly. Jane (Ngaio, Wellington)

“We have used them twice and both times had such a good experience. Really friendly and lovey people. They did a tree removal for us which was excellent. I would absolutely use them again if we needed an arborist. Thank you!” (Rona, Southgate, Wellington)

“Max has done arborist work for me. I was impressed at the careful way he shaped the trees to look natural and balanced. He tidied up efficiently at the end of the project. Max is professional and personable.” Elaine (Northland, Wellington)
